Degree Programs in Packaging

Undergraduate Program | Graduate programs

The Bachelor of Science program in the School of Packaging prepares students for a variety of careers in packaging. Students have a strong grounding in science and mathematics, and a cognate in business, in addition to a well-rounded set of courses in packaging. Elective courses give students the opportunity to specialize in various areas of packaging.

The required undergraduate core courses start with an introduction to packaging, proceed through courses on various packaging materials, packaging systems, testing, and computer applications, and culminate in Packaging Development, the senior capstone experience. In addition to the requirements of the School of Packaging, graduates must meet the requirements of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), and of Michigan State University.

Most packaging courses are taught by regular members of the faculty. A few are taught by other individuals with special competency in the particular area of packaging. Hands-on experiences are a very important part of the program, with approximately half of the courses incorporating formal laboratory components, and others using more informal experiences. In addition, the internship experience provides for-credit paid work experience, and is regarded highly by students, prospective employers, and the faculty.

Employment prospects after graduation are quite good, with starting salaries consistently in the same range as those of engineering graduates. Students move into a variety of positions, in a variety of types of companies. Positions range from sales to production to research. Companies include packaging material manufacturers, converters, and packaging users, as well as associated organizations such as parcel services and government.
