Student organizations provide
an many opportunities for students. By working in student organizations,
students gain experience in working in and leading groups, planning
activities, and evaluating the results. Most student organizations also
provide links to similar adult organizations. The following are three
organizations which are currently active in the School of Packaging.
Institute of Packaging
Professionals (IoPP)
The Institute of Packaging Professionals is the primary professional
organization for people working in the field of packaging. All Packaging
students are eligible for membership in the student chapter of the Institute
of Packaging Professionals (IoPP). Activities include field trips to
Packaging student events, attendance at packaging industry trade shows,
company visits, and social events with other Packaging students and
faculty. Regular chapter meetings often include guest speakers from
industry or other programs. A faculty member serves as advisor.
Students also interact and
meet with members of the professional chapters of IoPP in the state.
Once each year, the Michigan Chapter, the West Michigan Chapter, and
the student chapter hold a joint meeting in the Lansing area. The West
Michigan chapter provides scholarships and also conducts a mentoring
program for students.
Pi Kappa Gamma (PKG)
Pi Kappa Gamma is the packaging honor society. High-achieving Packaging
students can be invited to become members during their Sophomore, Junior
or Senior years. Among other activities, Pi Kappa Gamma sponsors an
open house for Freshmen students each year to help ease the transition
into university life and the organization also holds a reception for
graduates and parents before commencement each Fall and Spring semester.
Women in Packaging
The student chapter of Women in Packaging is available to all interested
students (although it began as a women's organization). The organization
deals primarily with professional development and provides assistance
and support to women in the packaging industry who often have to balance
the time demands and other pressures of employment, children and home
life. Women in Packaging provides a "networking" and "mentoring"opportunity
for female students and professional women.
Other campus organizations
In addition to the Packaging student organizations, there are numerous
other student organizations available to Packaging students. These include
the Associated Students of Michigan State University, the Student Senate
of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, political organizations,
various honor societies, and many others.
